Skin Care Routine During COVID-19 — How To Avoid Maskne

11/09/2020 By Claire Ketterer Leave a Comment

Maskne is surely a hot topic right now. Formed by “mask” and “acne“, it describes the apparition of imperfections on the lower part of the face. It is caused by wearing a protective mask on a daily basis. So, how to avoid this annoying issue? Surely not by not wearing your mask. In this regard, I thought I would share with you some tips I came across and tested for myself.

Why does maskne appear?

When wearing your mask a whole day long, your skin does not “breathe” as much as it would normally. As a matter of fact, it is is kept warm and moist under the mask (think about breathing and sweating too). Thus, this leads to pore occlusion: sebum build-up that clogs pores and generates imperfections.

How to avoid maskne?

The four tips I am about to present all aim to avoid sebum build-up. That is basically how you will get rid of maskne.

Disclaimer: I am no dermatologist. I am sharing tips that worked for me. My skin type is combination, with sensitive skin on the cheeks and greasy on the T-zone. I only selected advice from reliable sources, among them the “Pillow Derm Talks” by Dr Shereene Idriss, a renowned cosmetic dermatologist from New York.

Note: Please be aware that mixing different active ingredients during a given step may cause reaction on the skin. You can easily check for combos to avoid on the Internet.

1. Clean thoroughly

At night, after removing your make-up, proceed to double cleansing. You can use two different products (as in the Korean routine: one that is oil-based, followed by another that is water-based). Or use twice the same (with a water-based cleanser).

2. Exfoliate often

You can use exfoliating products that have either “mechanical” or “chemical” action. Exfoliation helps getting rid of dead skin and stimulates microcirculation in superficial layers of the skin. I will briefly explain the difference between these two kinds of peeling.

On one hand, mechanical peelings contain abrasive agents. The most common are dead sea salt, coffee grounds for instance. The scrubing action is quite strong with these products and is not advisable for sensitive skin. As for the use, you may want to stick to 2-3 times a week, depending on how your skin reacts.

On the other hand, we have chemical peelings. They offer a wide range of intensity, from superficial to deeply renewing the skin (available over-the-counter or performed in beauty institutes). Their peeling action is induced chemically, as their name indicates. For instance, a few ingredients that are commonly present in at-home peelings are salicylic acid (BHA) and glycolic acid (AHA). At first, I would recommend using it once a week, for building up resistance. And then you could gradually increase to once every two days, ideally. Also, chemical peelings are best used at night, as they are photosensitivizing.

And in both cases, do not forget to apply moisturizer afterwards, as peeling is drying for the skin.

3. Avoid make-up on the lower part of the face

Yup, that one may seem odd at first. But it is quite obvious that putting a layer of make-up between your skin and your mask may not seem like such a good idea. Therefore, it would be best to keep the make-up mostly on the eyes nowadays. Moreover, nobody will see your lipstick (not even yourself) under a mask: it would be a shame to waste it!

4. Purify with a mask

Lastly, another recommandation would be to help reduce sebum production and dry imperfections with the use of masks. This can be done deally 1-2 times a week, depending on your needs. Typically, clay-based masks are used for this purpose.

My current favourite products to fight maskne

For cleansing

  • All-over solid cleanser for face & body, with charcoal—Sephora
  • Enzyme Cleansing Gel—Mario Badescu, available at Sephora

For peeling action

Please note that I do not use mechanical peelings, so I will only be sharing chemical peeling products.

  • AHA fruit acids Firming Sleeping Cream—Sephora
  • Ready steady glow daily AHA tonic—REN clean skincare, available at Sephora
  • Glycolic acid Glow Peeling Pads—Sephora
  • Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner—Youth to the People, available at Sephora

For masking

  • Bamboo mask stick (mattifying)—Sephora
  • Masque 103 (with 3 kinds of clay)—Yon-Ka
  • Spirulina mask stick (purifying)—Sephora
  • Glycolic acid Overnight Glow Mask—Sephora (for peeling action)

Others

  • Salicylic acid Clarifying lotion—Sephora (apply locally on imperfections)

🇬🇧 This September, I am starting my very las 🇬🇧 This September, I am starting my very last (hopefully🤞🏼) university semester, but things are a bit special. Indeed, I am not even going to class, as I validated all my courses online in June already. Therefore, I have been spending all my time on romantic dates with my thesis 💻 I should be done with it soon, and as I am advancing, I cannot help feeling a bit sad, or more exactly nostalgic already. This is the end of an era. But also the beginning of a new one I am very excited about 💭
