Geneva City Guide – Afternoon Tea at Hôtel d’Angleterre

Today, we are talking about food. Let’s talk about the afternoon tea!

When we were in Great Britain last year and the year before, we just loved having afternoon teas. We tasted as many as we could. So in the end, we have had it in London, Manchester, and in some more rural places in Wales or England. Now, we are still craving for it, and we needed to find a place with a high standard offer in Switzerland.

The place

The Hôtel d’Angleterre seemed to be a good place to start our investigation. They claim themselves to have the best afternoon tea around here. We just had to go try it out.

You can enjoy your afternoon tea at the Windows Restaurant, at the entrance of the hotel. The restaurant is spacious and is very elegant. The place is very welcoming and so is the staff, who will truly make everything possible to make you happy. As I often say, this is very important for having a great time.

The food

Fantastic? Fabulous? Probably both. Afternoon tea is a serious matter. Tea, scones (along with Gruyère double cream and jam), sweets and tea sandwiches. Everything prepared delicately and according to your needs (we orderer a vegetarian version of the afternoon tea). And there is one thing I can guarantee you: when you finish this meal, you will be done for the day. Seriously. Did you know that the Windows Restaurant had to lower the portions because clients were not able to finish their afternoon tea? Generous indeed!

In one word

My absolute favourite? The scones. Still hot, mellow but not too much, I had to admit they know what they are doing. This afternnon tea is truly authentic and reaches the same level of awesomeness as in Great Britain. And let me tell you this is not the case for every restaurant around here. It is worth every franc you will spend on it. When you just think how costly some snacks are in the city-centre, you might as well pay a little extra and enjoy a luxurious and indulgent afternoon tea. Don’t you think?

Aujourd’hui, j’aimerais vous parler de goûter. L’afternoon tea, vous connaissez?

Lorsqu’on était au Royaume-Uni l’année passée et l’année d’avant, on adorait prendre l’afternoon tea. On le faisait partout où c’était possible. Résultat: on a goûté ce délicieux goûter à Londres, à Manchester et à quelques endroits en campagne au Pays de Galles et en Angleterre. On en est tombés amoureux, et il nous a fallu trouver un endroit en Suisse étant à la hauteur des standards britanniques.

Le lieu

L’Hôtel d’Angleterre semblait être le lieu idéal pour goûter un afternoon tea en Suisse. L’Hôtel lui-même prétend qu’il est le meilleur de la région. Ni une ni deux, nous nous sommes décidés à nous faire notre propre avis sur la question.

L’afternoon tea est proposé au Restaurant Windows. Grand, éclairé et élégant, l’endroit est très chaleureux et donne le sourire dès le moment où l’on franchit la porte d’entrée. Le personnel est plus qu’aimable et fera tout ce qu’il peut pour vous offrir un agréable moment. Comme je le dis souvent, un accueil chaleureux est vraiment quelque chose que j’apprécie. Il peut changer entièrement la façon dont je vais profiter de l’expérience.

Le repas

Fantastique, fabuleux? Probablement un mélange des deux. L’afternoon tea, ce n’est pas un repas qui se prépare à la légère. Thé, scones (avec double crème de la Gruyère et confiture), pâtisseries et tea sandwiches sont de mise. Le tout est préparé très délicatement et ajusté à vos besoins ou envies (nous avons demandé une version végétarienne). Si je peux vous garantir une chose, c’est qu’en finissant le repas, vous n’aurez pas besoin de manger le soir. Petite anecdote: aussi bon et délicieux que ce repas soit, le Restaurant Windows a du réduire les portions de l’afternoon tea parce que les clients n’arrivaient trop souvent pas à tout manger. En effet, il y avait même davantage de pâtisseries!

En un mot

Mon favori? Les scones. Encore chaud, moelleux mais pas trop, on voit que le sujet est maîtrisé. Cet afternoon tea est réellement authentique et réussit à se placer au même niveau que ceux que l’on trouve au Royaume-Uni. Et permettez moi de dire que ce n’est pas le cas de tous les établissements de la région. Honnêtement, cet afternoon tea vaut largement son prix. Quand on pense à ce qu’on paie dans le centre-ville pour un des petits snacks trop onéreux, on se dit qu’il vaudrait certainement mieux payer la différence et avoir droit à une expérience haut de gamme.
